Among celebrations the NFL staged around this year’s Super Bowl was the third “A Night of Pride,” for which the league partnered with GLAAD to spotlight its commitment to LGBTQ+ players and fans.
It’s an event that not long ago was inconceivable for most football enthusiasts—including R.K. Russell, the first NFL player to come out as bisexual, in 2019.
Since then, Russell’s work with the organization has led to giant strides in a domain that’s been the definition of traditional heteromasculinity. “I can say from 2019 to now, they have fully 180’d,” Russell says. “When the NFL is reaching out and wanting to know how they can become more inclusive for players, more diverse and more proactive in showing their support… when the NFL wants to know what they’re doing wrong, that’s huge”…
