Taura Stinson

Taura Stinson is a Los Angeles-based Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy nominated songwriter/composer. Her projects include the Netflix’s animated feature, Thelma the Unicorn, featuring collaborations with former Alabama Shakes frontwoman, Brittany Howard, as well as the theme song, “Moon Girl Magic,” written with longtime collaborator Raphael Saadiq for Marvel’s Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur. She and frequent collaborator, Nicholas Britell co-wrote “Slip Away,” for the Sony Classics film, CARMEN. As well as “Call Me Cruella” for Disney’s CRUELLA, and the Oscar shortlisted song “Just Look Up,” co-written with Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi for the Netflix film DON’T LOOK UP.

Taura earned both a Golden Globe & Academy Award nomination for the song “Mighty River” for the Netflix film, Mudbound, alongside Mary J. Blige and Raphael Saadiq. Additionally, she and composers Heather McIntosh & Allyson Newman, were nominated for a Primetime Emmy for the song, “All About Me,” written for Showtime’s THE L-WORD: GENERATION Q. She has also written with Pharrell Williams for his Amazon series HARLEM and with Ali Shaheed-Muhammed and Adrian Younge for the ABC series, Reasonable Doubt. Additional works include original songs for Disney’s Better Nate than Ever and Cheaper by the Dozen. During the span of her illustrious career, she also wrote and produced several songs for season 2 of Apple TV’s Central Park , was the lyricist and lead songwriter for the blockbuster film RIO 2, and she also penned the song ‘Be Alright” for Steven Tyler for the animated feature EPIC, starring Beyoncé and Steven Tyler.

Taura has also provided her A&R expertise to several projects, most notably for Music World Entertainment, in connection with BET’s SUNDAY BEST. Her projects included chart-topping albums for artists including Elder Goldwire, Amber Bullock, Joshua Rodgers and Brian Courtney Wilson and the GRAMMY winning single “Jesus” for Le Andria Johnson. Taura managed to do all of this while writing and arranging various songs for the TV show, The Underground, including “Heaven’s Door” performed by Alice Smith. She also served as associate producer on the Fox Film Black Nativity, for which she was also the lead songwriter for artists including Mary J. Blige, Nas and Jennifer Hudson, among others. Her work also includes the Critic’s Choice Award winning song “Jump,” performed by Cynthia Erivo, and written with Laura Karpman and Raphael Saadiq, for the award-winning documentary feature STEP. Taura and Raphael’s collaborations also include the GRAMMY-nominated songs “Good Man” (by Raphael) and “Show Me the Way” by the legendary band, Earth Wind & Fire. Her other early career achievements include co-writing the Men in Black soundtrack hit “Killing Time” for Destiny’s Child and the cult classic, “Gangsta Lean” aka. This is for my Homies for 90’s group DRS, which spent six weeks at #1 on the R&B charts, and peaked at #4 on Billboards Hot 100. Taura has also lent her backing vocals to various chart-topping song recordings including “Bang Bang” by Jesse J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj, “Side to Side” by Ariana Grande, “Nobody Love” by Tori Kelly, “Your Song” by Elton John and Patti Labelle and “Faith “by Steve Wonder.

Advocacy is equally important to Taura as art. Over the years, she has mentored for SPARK, ACADEMY GOLD and She Is the Music, among others. She also serves as chair of the Houston Community College Music Program, as well as on the board of the Alliance of Women Film Composers. She is also an independent author whose first book “100 Things Every Black Girl Should Know” was awarded the In the Margins Award, an award given by an association of librarians to at-risk youth. Taura’s brand is synonymous with conclusively telling stories that directly connect with the heart. Currently, she is writing more music, books and music-forward stories for film and television.
